The van that earns its keep.
Basecamp is a modular adventure van built on the MAN TGE platform — flexible enough to haul a load through the week, carry every bit of kit you own, and open up for a weekend away. One van that fits your actual life, not just your holidays.

Not every van spends its life at the trailhead. Sometimes you need it to move a sofa, clear the garage, or carry something that wouldn’t go anywhere near a finished conversion. Then the same weekend you want to throw the bikes in, load up the dogs and the kit, and head somewhere for a few days.
Basecamp is built for exactly that. The layout is modular and pared back on purpose — a sliding bed that moves fore and aft, garage cabinets kept deliberately minimal, and seating you can configure around how you actually travel. The result is a van with proper load space and the flexibility to switch between jobs, without giving up the build quality that runs through everything we make.
It’s the van we’d reach for ourselves on the weeks when one van has to do everything. Built in West Sussex, on the same platform and to the same standard as the Summit and Mesa, with the systems sized for shorter trips and outdoor living rather than weeks off-grid.

The sliding bed
The Basecamp’s bed slides fore and aft, so you decide how much of the van is for sleeping and how much is for everything else. Push it forward for a longer load bay when you’re carrying serious kit; slide it back to open up the living area in the evening. It’s the simplest expression of what Basecamp is — a van that reshapes itself around what you’re doing that day.
The garage & load space
The garage cabinets are kept deliberately pared back, which leaves you with far more usable load space than a fully built-out conversion. Bikes, boards, bags, dogs, and the kind of big, awkward loads that come up in ordinary life — a piece of furniture, a house move, a weekend’s worth of gear for four people — all go in without a fight. L-track is fitted throughout, so whatever you’re carrying can be secured properly for the drive.
Seating & the shower bench
Basecamp travels two as standard, on a bench seat that houses the pop-up shower and composting toilet. It’s the flexible heart of the van — washing facilities on board when you want them, folded completely away when you don’t. For buyers who need to carry more people rather than wash inside, the bench is swapped for two additional belted rear seats. With the pop-top added, the van sleeps four.
Kitchen
The Basecamp kitchen runs a single induction hob, a compressor fridge, and a stainless steel sink and tap — a compact, well-built galley for people who keep cooking simple or do most of it outside. Finished to the same standard as the rest of the van, with HPL surfaces and powder-coated aluminium detailing, and sized to leave more of the van for load space. For a larger setup with a double hob and oven, the Summit and Mesa are built around that.
Electrical system
Basecamp runs a Victron electrical system built around a 1.8kVA inverter, a 200Ah LiFePO4 lithium battery, and a 50A Victron DC/DC charger that tops the battery up from the engine as you drive. Solar charging is fitted from 200W, with upgrades available. The same quality of equipment used throughout the range, sized for shorter trips and everyday use rather than extended time fully off-grid. If your trips run longer or more remote, additional battery and solar are available, and the Summit’s larger system is worth a look.
Heating & water
The Basecamp uses a Truma Combi diesel heating system that runs entirely from the main diesel tank, providing warm air heating throughout the van and hot water from an integrated tank. There’s no separate gas cylinder to manage or run out of. Fresh water is carried in an internal tank, protected from the cold and usable year-round.
The shower
Basecamp has a pop-up shower and a composting toilet as standard, housed in the bench seat. Both fold away completely when not in use, so the space goes back to the van rather than living permanently as a bathroom. There’s also an outdoor shower connection at the rear, for rinsing off kit, wetsuits, and dogs after a day out. If you want a permanent fixed shower room, that’s the Mesa.
Build & finish
Pared back, not built down. The furniture is high-pressure laminate with powder-coated aluminium corners — the same hard-wearing materials used in the Summit and Mesa. The aluminium overheads run the full length of the van. Underfoot, the floor is Lonseal Lonwoven: a commercial-grade sheet vinyl laid in one piece, with a factory-applied Topseal urethane finish that resists scuffs, stains and everyday wear — the right floor for muddy boots, wet dogs and heavy kit.

Built for where you’re going
An Onyx roof rack, fitted as standard
Every Basecamp leaves the workshop with an Onyx aluminium roof rack — designed and fabricated in-house and fitted as standard. It’s sized to carry rooftop kit properly, with room for solar and a side ladder for safe, clean access.
Specified for where you actually go
Many buyers add optional upgrades before their first trip: Black Rhino Warlord alloys with BF Goodrich KO2 all-terrain tyres, Onyx rear carriers with wheel carrier, and a Fiamma F45 awning. None are included in the standard price, but all are available — and for buyers heading off-road or away from facilities, they make a real difference.
If you’re considering a lift kit, all-terrain tyres, or a specific wheel and carrier setup, we’ll talk through what makes sense for your trips on your discovery call.

Basecamp is built for people who…
- Need one van that works through the week and gets away at the weekend
- Carry serious kit — bikes, boards, dogs, and the occasional big, awkward load
- Want flexible load space rather than a fixed, fully built-out interior
- Take shorter trips, or do most of their cooking outdoors
- Already own a MAN TGE and want the conversion only
- Want a van built to the Onyx standard at a more accessible price point
Whether it’s a weekend in the hills, a week away with the bikes, or a Tuesday spent moving someone’s furniture — Basecamp is the van that handles all of it.
Questions worth asking
How is Basecamp different from the Summit?
+
Both are medium wheelbase MAN TGE conversions, but they’re built for different priorities. The Summit is an open-plan, high-specification two-berth designed around comfortable living — a full kitchen, a super king sliding bed, an indoor shower, and a large off-grid electrical and heating system for extended time away.
Basecamp is built around flexibility and load space. The layout is modular and pared back, the kitchen is compact, and the systems are sized for shorter trips. It’s the right van if you need it to do more than one job — work van one day, weekend camper the next — and the more accessible of the two on price.
Can I have Basecamp as a conversion only?
+
Yes. If you already own a suitable MAN TGE, we can carry out the conversion on your vehicle rather than supplying a new one. This is one of the things that makes Basecamp flexible — it suits buyers who already use a van for work and want to add camping capability without buying a second vehicle. Tell us about your base vehicle on a discovery call and we’ll confirm whether it’s suitable.
How many people can Basecamp sleep?
+
Two as standard, on the sliding bed. With the pop-top and extra seating added, it sleeps four. The pop-top changes the roofline and the character of the van, so if four-berth use is central to how you’ll travel, it’s worth seeing one in person at the workshop before you decide.
What are my shower and toilet options?
+
A pop-up shower and a composting toilet come as standard, housed in the bench seat and folding away completely when not in use. There’s also an outdoor shower connection at the rear, useful for rinsing kit, wetsuits, and dogs. If you’d rather carry more people than wash inside, the bench can be swapped for two belted rear seats — and if you want a permanent fixed shower room, the Arroyo and the Mesa are both built around one.
What off-grid capability does Basecamp have?
+
Basecamp runs a Victron electrical system with a 200Ah lithium battery, a 1.8kVA inverter, 50A DC/DC charging from the engine, and solar from 200W. It’s sized for shorter trips and everyday use rather than extended off-grid living, and for most Basecamp owners it’s exactly enough. Additional battery capacity and solar are available if your trips run longer. If extended off-grid endurance is a priority, the Summit’s larger system is worth comparing.
The Truma Combi heating and hot water run from the main diesel tank rather than the battery, which means cold-weather use doesn’t draw down your reserves the way an electric heater would.
Can I use Basecamp in winter?
+
Yes. The van is insulated throughout, and the Truma Combi diesel heating provides warm air and hot water from the main fuel tank, with no gas cylinder to run out of. The internal fresh water tank is protected from the cold. For buyers spending significant time off-grid in deep winter, it’s worth discussing the electrical specification on your discovery call.
Do I need a special licence to drive Basecamp?
+
No. The MAN TGE MWB platform falls within the 3,500kg gross vehicle weight limit covered by a standard Category B driving licence. If you’re planning to drive in Europe, your UK licence is valid across EU member states.
Why the MAN TGE over the VW Crafter or Mercedes Sprinter?
+
The MAN TGE isn’t the most familiar choice — most people arrive expecting a Sprinter — but it’s the right platform for what we build, and the reasons are practical.
Against the Sprinter, it’s comparable in quality and capability at a slightly lower base price, which means more of your budget goes into the conversion rather than the base vehicle.
Against the VW Crafter, the more important difference is support. The MAN TGE is the commercial vehicle version of the same platform, which means it’s backed by MAN’s truck dealer network — service centres across the UK and throughout Europe. For a van you’re taking seriously into remote places, that network matters in a way it doesn’t for a van that stays close to home.
We’ve driven other platforms. We kept coming back to this one.
What warranty do I get with Basecamp?
+
The MAN TGE base vehicle comes with a three-year manufacturer warranty through the MAN dealer network across the UK and Europe. The Onyx conversion is covered by a one-year Onyx warranty, and Victron components carry their own manufacturer warranty. Every completed build also comes with a free three-month check-up. For conversion-only builds on a customer’s existing vehicle, the base vehicle warranty depends on the age and history of that vehicle — we’ll cover this on your discovery call.
Is Basecamp road legal?
+
Yes. Every Basecamp built on a new vehicle goes through an Individual Vehicle Approval process and is registered from new as a motorhome. A panel van registration option is available if preferred — which suits buyers who want to keep the van usable for work — and comes with a small discount on the build price. It’s worth understanding the insurance and usage implications of each before you decide.
Want more van?
Basecamp is built for flexibility and load space in a compact, medium wheelbase van. If you want a more open, higher-specification two-berth for longer trips, the Summit is the one. If you need to carry and sleep a family of four, the Outpost takes the same practical, gear-first thinking onto a long wheelbase, and the Mesa adds a permanent shower room. And if none of the models fit, Hors Catégorie is our bespoke programme.
